Review: Sea Of Stars by Amy A. Bartol

Sea of Stars by Amy A. Bartol

Book 2 of the Kricket Series

Synopsis:
Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.

A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection—and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the thing about me and sequels: either they work for me or they don't. And this one kind of didn't work for me, much to my disappointment. If you've read my previous review on the first book of this series, Under Different Stars, then you'll know how much I was looking forward to this book. I love Amy's writing and I'll read practically anything she writes. Her grocery lists, shopping lists, hell I'll even read the words she writes on the paper when she plays hangman.

But that being said this book was a bit of a disappointment to me. It wasn't terrible, but it just didn't give me that same wow-what-just-happened feeling that I had after I finished reading Under Different Stars. The thing I really loved in the first book was how in depth Kricket and Trey's romantic relationship was described; how you could sense the frustration between the two of them that they couldn't act on their feelings towards each other due to other people, the anguish when Kricket was handed over to Reagant (forgive if I got the name wrong it's been a while since I last read UDS) and also there's a bit of this quirky humour that I really liked!

But in Sea Of Stars, there was none of that! It's mostly made out of Trey and Kricket making out a lot, which irritated me big time. There's none of that sweet romance that was present in the first book, it just felt like it went right from "Let's try out this relationship 'cause I really like you" to "Hey! Let's make out every 5 minutes!" By the end of the book I came really close to tearing my eyes and hair out, and wanted to scream in frustration! I normally really love Amy Bartol's work, but I've no idea what happened in this book *sad face*

There were a whole bunch of things that happened throughout the book and quite a lot of action scenes as well, however I didn't find them particularly striking and to be honest, by the end of the book I had forgotten what had happened exactly and felt kind of meh. I know everyone else gave this book stunning reviews, and I'm just like "HUH?" Maybe it's just me *sighs* Oh well. I still have high hopes for the third upcoming book though, Darken The Stars, so hopefully it'll get better! I'm so in love with the first book I just don't have it in me to give up on this series.

Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Book 2 of the Infernal Devices Series

Synopsis:
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you're ready for some serious fangirling because I am about 10 seconds away from full-out squealing. This book was beyond amazing, and I loved every single word from it.

My favourite part about the book is probably the 3 main characters: Tessa, Will and Jem.
Tessa is a 16 year old girl who is shapeshifting shadowhunter, or a warlock, and due to a number of situations and circumstances she ends up in the London Institute, following the events of the first book of the series, Clockwork Angel. So in this second book, Tessa explores her shapeshifting powers and her ability to transform into someone else, and becomes more sure of her power. Her relationships with the two boys also change dramatically, with Jem from friendship to something much more (I won't spoil it for you if you haven't read this book yet - but if you haven't read this book you have to read it right now!) and with Will as well, with a bit of this "forbidden romance" thing, due to a  so called 'curse' placed on Will. But we'll talk about that later.

Being the complete sucker for romances that I am, I focused on more of the romance aspect of this book , particularly the relationship between each of the main characters,

1. Jem and Tessa
So in this second book, a very different side of Jem is revealed, that makes him seem incredibly alluring. Jem stole my heart in this book and I completely fell in love with him. About a quarter way into the book, we slowly begin to see how Jem has feelings for Tessa, and really, it's the most adorable thing in the world. Sweet, beautiful, charming Jem. He's so gentle and calm, and the way he speaks to Tessa just melts your heart!

"I only regret that it came too soon. I-I would have wanted to-to court you first. To take you driving, with a chaperon."
"A chaperon?" Tessa laughed despite herself.
He went on determinedly. "To tell you of my feelings first, before I showed them. To write poetry for you-"
You don't even like poetry," Tessa said, her voice catching on a half laugh of relief.
"No. But you make me want to write it. Does that not count for anything?"

Oh Jem. Sweet, sweet Jem. You've just stolen my heart and I don't think I'm ever going to get it back *swoon*

2. Jem and Will
In case you haven't read the first book, Jem and Will are parabati, which means they are like brothers and are bound to protect each other. I love their relationship because they fit so well together ; Will, who is sometimes cruel and rough at the edges but Jem, the calm and gentle one, softens the rough edges of Will and is really the only person that Will fiercely cares about until Tessa comes along.

"I though you needed me," Jem said. "There is a wall you have built about yourself, Will, and I have never asked you why. But no one should shoulder every burden alone. I though you would let me inside if I became your parabati, and then you would have at least someone to lean upon. I did wonder what my death would mean for you. I used to fear it, for your sake. I feared you would be left alone inside that wall. But now... something has changed. I do not know why. But I know that is true."
"That what is true?" Will's fingers were still digging into Jem's wrist.
"That the wall is coming down."

The language in this book is just amazing and I love every sentence of it - it's not the modern way of speaking but rather the old, kind of formal way which I absolutely love and I think that's what makes the book really interesting too.

3. Will and Tessa
These two kind of have a love-hate relationship from where we left of in Clockwork Angel, where Will said to Tessa "There is no future for a shadowhunter who dallies with warlocks" Major ouch. But still, Tessa can't help herself as she falls for Will, and secretly he loves her too but won't let himself get close to her due to a curse placed on him from a demon, which caused him to leave his home when he was young - I won't say anymore in case you haven't read the book! So throughout this book, Tessa and Will have this love-hate relationship, and at some parts it's actually quite hilarious, and also quite sweet. I actually really love Will though, for all his rough exterior and seemingly cruel attitude, he's actually very soft and gentle on the inside, which made me fall for him completely.

“They’re not hideous,” said Tessa.
Will blinked at her. “What?”
“Gideon and Gabriel,” said Tessa. “They’re really quite good-looking, not hideous at all.”
“I spoke,” said Will, in sepulchral tones, “of the pitch-black inner depths of their souls.”
Tessa snorted. “And what color do you suppose the inner depths of your soul are, Will Herondale?”
“Mauve,” said Will.”

I also really love that sense of dry-ish humour that's present throughout the whole book, making me smile and giggle at some parts. And right at the end of the book, Will  (spoiler alert!) realises that his so called "curse" was actually fake, and goes after Tessa, rejoiced in the fact that he can finally be with the girl he loves, when he finds out that she is now engaged to Jem. And so Will leaves, his heart broken to pieces and Tessa also realises that she can never be with Will too, who she loves deeply as well, and the way Cassandra Clare describes it is so perfectly heartbreaking that it makes you want to cry. I'm pretty sure I shed a tear or two- or a thousand - while reading this part.

"You can never love me," He said flatly, and when he did not respond, when she said nothing, he shuddered - a shudder that ran through his whole body - and pushed away from the armchair without looking at her.  ........

For a moment she felt absolutely nothing. And then, as if from a very great distance, she heard herself cry out, and it was like a key turned inside her heart, freeing the tears at last. The poker clattered to the ground.

When Sophie came dashing in, having heard her scream, she found Tessa on her knees by the fire, her burned hand pressed to her chest, sobbing as if her heart would break.

And lastly, another thing I loved from this book was the constant referring to books and really, the love of literature.
I really love the constant quoting of books like A Tale of Two City's, or the characters ability to make a little rhyme on the spot.

For Tessa Gray, on the occasion of being given a copy of Vathek to read:

Caliph Vathek and his dark horde
Are bound for Hell, you won't be bored!
Your faith in me will be restored-
Unless this token you find untoward
And my poor gift you have ignored

-Will

Oh Will , you never cease to make me laugh. And this particular part also made me smile and really fall in love with the 2 male main characters:

Will set his fork down and began cheerfully, in the manner of Edward Lear's book of Nonsense:

"There once was a lass from New York
Who found herself hungry in York.
But the bread was like rocks,
The parsnips shaped like-"

"You can't rhyme 'York' with 'York', " interrupted Tessa. "It's cheating."
"She's right, you know," said Jem, his delicate fingers playing with the stem of his wineglass. "Especially with 'fork' being so obviously the correct choice-"

I can go on and on talking about this book, quoting bits here and there that I really loved but really, this could go on forever. If I could, I would quote the whole book because there's not one part that I didn't absolutely love and fall in love with. This book was utterly amazing and I fell in love head-over-heels with it. And I'm sure you've realised by now that this review has been nothing but me fangirling and sqeualing over the main characters and the romance but oh well....what can be done?
If you haven't read it, I highly suggest you go and read it now! And with that, I'll leave you with a little rhyme by my dear Will.....( You'll only get it if you've read the book!)

"Demon pox, oh, demon pox,
Just how is it acquired?
One must go down to the bad part of town
Until one is very tired.
Demon pox, oh, demon pox
I had it all along-
No, not the pox, you foolish blocks,
I mean this very song-
For I was right, and you were wrong!"

TBR of the Week: Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe

Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe by Benjamin Alire Sánez

Synopsis:

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had this book for the longest longest time, but I've just never gotten down to reading it. Why the sudden interest in reading it now, you ask? Well, some of my lovely friends on Instagram highly recommended this book to me, and I've been looking for a good read for the summer to curl up with on the beach, so I've decided to try this book. But first, let me start of by saying how beautiful this cover is! When I first heard of this book, the first thing that drew me in was not the title nor the description of it, it was the stunning book cover! This book is probably has one of the prettiest book covers I've ever seen. You know the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" Yeah, that's totally me. Everytime I see a pretty cover at the bookstore, it's like moths being attracted to light - I zoom right over and pick up the book. Bad habit I know,  but I can't help it.

After reading other bloggers review of this book though, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be reduced to a blubbering-mess after this. Especially after reading The Book Smuggler's review on this book:

"I think the best thing I can say about the book is how I can see Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe as a book that can be picked for a lit class to be dissected for its craft and examined for its themes BUT only after the reader is able to recover from becoming a blubbering mess of FEELINGS and ensuing powerlessness to form coherent thoughts all because they identify so much with the story."

Get me a box of tissues and I'm good to go!

Waiting On A Wednesday: Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L.Armentrout

Following my previous post on the first book of the Dark Elements series, I though I'd do a post on the sequel to White Hot Kiss, Stone Cold Touch.

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm about 100 pages in and I'm really loving it so far! Here are some of my favourite quotes: '

“I love you Layla. Do you hear me? I've loved you since the first moment I heard your voice and I will continue to love you. No matter what. I love you.”
The feels -I can practically feel my heart turning into mush!

His lips curled up on one side. "As all of you should know, if you've read your 'when shit hits the fan' manual, there are four chains securing Lilith in Hell.
Ah Roth, sweet sweet Roth, whatever would we do without you?

And that's it for this weeks Waiting On A Wednesday post! Let me know what you're reading currently!

Review: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L.Armentrout

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L.Armentrout

Book 1 of The Dark Elements Series

Synopsis:
One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just received my copy of 'White Hot Kiss' by Jennifer Armentrout from the mail yesterday and being the massive fan of Jennifer's works that I am, I was beyond excited to re-read the book! I already bought the e-book and read it sometime last year but I couldn't help myself so I bought the hardcopy as well :)
Let's start on the characters. I loved Layla, the main character so much. She's absolutely hilarious and also very stubborn and determined to get what she wants.

"Unlike other Wardens, I couldn't shed my human skin and kick major behind, but hair-pulling flipped my bitch switch like no one's business"

Layla is half demon-half Warden, but she lives with the Warden. She basically has this craving to take souls but she can't for obvious reasons (duh). Cue the love interest. Zayne, the son of the leader of the Warden Clan. He's like a brother to her but she has feelings for him that she knows will never be reciprocated because of the fact that she's half demon, and she can never get too close to him or she might suck his soul out (the horror!)

Then comes in Roth, the Crown Prince of Hell who swoops in and Layla falls in love with. Classic bad-boy swoops in to save damsel in distress scenario. However, I still fell for Roth really hard because, well he's funny, hilarious, cocky yet has a soft side for Layla which I find absolutely adorable.

"If I say thank-you, will you go away?"
"Yes."
"Thank you," I said eagerly.
"I lied."
"What?" I looked up at him frowning. "That's messed up."
Roth leaned down so that our faces were inches apart. God, he smelled wonderful. I closed my eyes briefly and I swore I could feel him smile.
"I'm a demon. I tend to lie from time to time"

This book was more of a romance and a love triange between Roth, Layla and Zayne rather than an action packed book. Don't get me wrong, there was still some terrific ass-kicking scenes which I loved, but it was more of a romance, which is not a problem for me at all! I'm a huge sucker for romances so naturally I fell in love with this book.

Overall, I really really enjoyed this book and would give it a 4/5 !The writing is enjoyable and would make for a good, quick light read that would definitely make you squeal over the hot main characters and fangirl over them (not that I'm currently doing that).

There is now also a sequel to the book, Stone Cold Touch.
And there's more! The third book, Every Last Breath, is coming out on the 28th of July by Harlequin Teen, so don't miss it!

Hope you enjoyed this review, let me know what you think! xx
