Review: Fire and Flood by Victoria Scott

Fire And Flood by Victoria Scott

Book 1 of the Fire and Flood Series

Synopsis:

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.

The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?

The Plot
Okay so this book is basically about this girl called Tella Holloway, whose moved to Montana because her brother Cody is sick and the doctors can't figure out why so the her parents decide the best thing is to get fresh air. She's desperate and doesn't know what to do, and bam, one day she's entered in this competition where they have to fight for survival, and only one person is the winner and receives something called the Cure which can help her brother. And in the midst of it all, she falls in love with another contender.

Hmmm sound familiar? Yep. This book is another on of those fight for survival, may-the-strongest-and-the-best-win type. Much like Hunger Games actually.

But similarities to the Hunger Games aside, it wasn't too bad. During the competition, each competitor received a sort of pet called Pandoras which would help them. I think the addition of the Pandoras definitely boosted the book up in it's ranking and made it more original, though they bore a frighteningly similar resemblance to Pokemon.

The Characters
For me, the characters were so-so. They weren't particularly great and weren't described in a lot of detail, though when the story begins we get a little background of Tella's background - she's a girl with a brother who's sick with some kind of virus that somehow can't be cured, and so her parents decide to move to Montana for fresh air to help him. The thing that really irritates me though is her need to be saved all the damn time.  During the whole book it's always her making mistakes and getting into trouble and Guy, her shining knight in armour swooping in to save her for some unknown reason. I mean, grow a fucking pair woman! I kept waiting for her to flip the fuck out of Guy who went hot and cold all the time, or lose her shit and release hell on everyone. But nope, never happened.

Then comes the main male character for the story and guess what his name is? Guy. And no, I'm not kidding. His name is freaking Guy. No points for originality there, is all I can say. He's this mysterious guy in the Brimstone Bleed who Tella keeps coming across and they eventually team up, grow closer... and well I think you can guess the rest. And here's the thing that really pisses me off. This guy goes hot and cold all the time. He keeps alternating between "Oh Tella, I think I love you, let me come and save you" and "Piss off Tella go find someone else to irritate". He's the classic moody, mysterious but hot main male character that always wants to protect the girl but won't show it.

Overall
Overall this book wasn't too bad; I didn't love it but I don't hate-hate it but it could definitely be better.
